Information about LATVIA Hidden away from the world"s view for over half a century by the Soviet occupation, Latvia is rediscovering its heritage and emerging as a vibrant tourist destination. Its landscape boasts untouched nature in abundance. Outside of Riga, be prepared to step back into history as the infrastructure in most parts is not yet as developed as that in Riga. For a small country, it is surprisingly easily to find peace and tranquillity. Its historic buildings date back to the days of the great trading in the Hanseatic League and beyond, while the Soviet occupation is clearly defined by social housing and administrative buildings. Everything about Latvia is a contrast, from season to season, from city to city, and there is very little pretence in Latvian life, making a visit of any length and for whatever reason a genuine and surprising experience. Latvia now benefits from full membership the EU.
